Description

Board-mounted photograph of close-up detail of the timber framing of the Old Rectory at Mirfield (West Yorkshire). The building is half-timbered and dates from the early 14th-century.

Biography or history

The Old Rectory at Mirfield was built around 1300 for John de Heton. The last Rector to live in the building was John de Welyen, who became Rector in 1401 and was the last Rector of Mirfield. The Rectory became the property of Kirklees Priory until 1539 and was acquired by Thomas Savile in 1540. It became the property of the Inghams of Blake Hall in the second half of the 18th century; and Miss W. Stancliffe, formerly of the Over Hall, lived there until her death. It was sold to Mr. Maurice Avison in 1964, and then to the late George Bottomley in 1967.
