Description
Copy of a photograph dating from the turn of the 19th/20th century, of two farmworkers with a three-horse team harnessed to a seed drill in fields at Thixendale (North Yorkshire). The man at the back controls the front pair of horses, and also keeps the chute of the drill clear of blockages. He holds a whip. The direction of the drill is controlled by the second man, who holds a pole linked to the shaft horse's bit. Both men wear dress typical of East Riding farm labourers, with corduroy bell-bottoms (often tied at the knee) and a double-breasted waistcoat or small jacket. (Although Thixendale is now situated in North Yorkshire, it lies close to the Yorkshire Wolds in the East Riding.)
