Description

Copy of a photograph dating from the turn of the 19th/20th century, of three farmworkers with a three-horse team harnessed to a corn drill in fields at Thixendale (North Yorkshire). The drill has shafts by which the horses are harnessed to it, and the swingle trees and cobble trees needed to link the front pair of horses to the drill can be seen behind their legs. The direction of the drill is controlled by the labourer holding the pole linked to the shaft horse's bit; the drill must be kept in the right position at all times. A second labourer holds the reins of the front pair to control them; whilst the third man (at the back) makes sure that the chutes of the drill are kept clear of blockages. The halters of both of the front pair are tied to the shaft horse. All three men wear dress typical of East Riding farm labourers, with corduroy bell-bottoms (often tied at the knee) and a double-breasted waistcoat or small jacket. (Although Thixendale is now situated in North Yorkshire, it lies
close to the Yorkshire Wolds in the East Riding.)

Mounted on Photo File card. With ms. note.
