Description

Copy of a photograph dating from the turn of the 19th/20th century, of shepherds with a flock of sheep at Thixendale (North Yorkshire). One of the shepherds is operating a turnip-cutting machine. The turnips are fed into a box at the top, and a handle on the side turns a wheel with cutters in place of spokes, which cuts the turnips as they pass through. A sheep dog sits in front of the cutting machine. The second man is probably a shepherd lad hired for a year and lodging in the farmhouse. Both men wear dress typical of East Riding farm labourers, with corduroy bell-bottoms (often tied at the knee) and a double-breasted waistcoat or small jacket. (Although Thixendale is now situated in North Yorkshire, it lies close to the Yorkshire Wolds in the East Riding.)

Mounted on Photo File card. With ms. note.
