Description

Ruins of stone farmhouse with adjoining barns at Roan Farm, Hurst ( North Yorkshire). Mounted on Photo File card with ms. notes on Hurst village, and catalogue details in the hand of Werner Kissling. The notes are based on information obtained from informant George Hodgson, who occupied the house until 1925. The photograph is accompanied by a mounted press cutting from the 'Yorkshire Evening Post' (mounted on a separate Photo File card), showing a photograph of the house, thatched and whitewashed, in 1927.

Originally held in Photo File: Farms - Houses and Buildings.

Biography or history

The house at Roan Farm is thought to have originally been a miner's cottage, Hurst village having historically owed its existence to lead mining. The building was originally thatched. Werner Kissling records Hurst as being a broken village of broken down stone walls and chimneys and deserted cottages at the time when he photographed the house at Roan Farm.
