This file contains a photocopy of Harold Orton's article outlining how the Survey of English Dialects (SED) fieldwork was conducted, and the 3-4 day process undertaken by fieldworkers to elicit information from a single informant. The article is photocopied from 'English Studies: A Journal of English Letters and Philology', volume 34, numbers 1-6 (1953), pp. 274-278.
