Description
This file contains a photocopy of a paper which investigates segmental length in the dialects of the Upper Southern United States, taking South Carolina as a case study. Sections include differing dialectal treatments of retroflex and lateral segments, the informant and his dialect, one-nucleus outputs of underlying dissyllabic representations, effects of boundaries, effects of accent, reciprocity in the length of nuclei and postnuclear obstruents, a hypothesis on the Southern States drawl, a summary of conclusions and an appendix summarising the results of the preliminary stage of the study. The paper is a corrected and revised version of a paper originally written in September 1966.
