Description

This file contains four typed transcripts of production scripts for programmes in the BBC's Radio Ballads series, by Ewan MacColl and Charles Parker. These are a copy of the production script for 'The Ballad of John Axon'(1958), telling the story of the death of a heroic Derbyshire train driver; a copy of the production script for 'Song of a Road'(1959), about the building of the M1 motorway in England; a copy of the script as recorded for 'Singing the Fishing'(1960), about North Sea herring fishermen; and a copy of the final production script for 'The Big Hewer' (1960), on coal mining.

Biography or history

The Radio Ballads series was produced by the BBC Home Service , and consisted of a series of one-hour recordings of songs, music and recordings collected from the public, describing the lives and experiences of working people. Ewan MacColl wrote the scripts and songs, Peggy Seeger arranged the music, and Charles Parker produced and edited the programmes. Both MacColl and Parker were involved in collecting recordings of informants.
