Description
A report outlining the findings of a survey undertaken collaboratively between the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies at Leeds, and the Department of English at University College, London . This was to collect information on regional patterns of bonfire customs, and present the results of their distribution in map form (to be included in a projected 'European Atlas of Folklore and Ethnology'). Questionnaires were sent to informants throughout England, but the responses in the main relate to the Northern Counties, and Yorkshire in particular.
Molloy-Morley's report contains an introduction to the Survey and the questionnaire used, general information on findings, traditional food at bonfires, tar barrel and other customs, dialect terms and other bonfires. Four printed maps are included, ms. labelled to show the distribution of bonfire customs recorded in the Survey. Supplementary information (from University College files) is inserted between leaves four and five.
