Description
A fieldwork notebook containing items of folklore collected during July 1963 in Goathland, North Yorkshire, from sixteen informants. For each informant, a name and address are given, and the item collected is recorded in numbered sections (titled Medicine, Weather, Harvest Customs, Superstitions, Calendar Customs, Riddles and Sayings, Recipes, Legends, Local Crafts). A number of additional informants, not interviewed by the collector, are listed at the end of the field notes. An ms. note inserted inside the front cover (dated September 1963) gives details of three enclosures (a picture of a Turf Pan, and two samples of salves), and a tape recording of an Egton blacksmith. None of these items have been traced.
It is unclear whether this fieldwork was undertaken in connection with an intended written piece of work. The only other research paper by R. J. Green held in the LAVC is an M.A. (Leeds, 1964), entitled 'St. George and the Dragon: A Study in Folk Art' ( LAVC/SRP/1/078).
