Description
A study of the dialect spoken in Crayke, North Yorkshire, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with three informants resident in the village.
An introduction to Crayke and the informants is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sound system of the dialect recorded in 19[79], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), the development of consonantal sounds from Old and Middle English down to 1980, and present a tabular summary of the Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Crayke dialect. A Word Index is included. An Ordnance Survey map (Coxwold, Sheet SE 57) is inserted inside the front cover.
