A study of the dialect spoken in the Lancashire town of Darwen, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with four local informants.
An introduction to the town and the informants is followed by four chapters which record the phonology of the Darwen dialect, recorded in 19[76], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Old French, Scandinavian, Latin and other equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Darwen dialect.
