Description

A study of the dialect spoken in the Lincolnshire village of Beckingham, based on interviews conducted with three principal informants during Easter 1972. In addition to this data, the collector also analysed a tape recording of another Beckingham speaker, George Hunt , recorded by Stanley Ellis.

An introduction to the village (including photographs) and the informants is followed by three chapters which present a description of the vowel sounds in the Beckingham dialect (with notes on unstressed syllables and consonants), describe the development of Middle English sounds in the dialect (vowels of stressed syllables), and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the dialect. An index of words recorded in the study is included.
