Description

A study of the dialect spoken by one man from Whittle-le-Woods in Lancashire, based on data collected in April 1962 using the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire and the tape recording of free conversation.

An introduction to the village and the informant, Dick Withnell, is followed by three chapters which describe the sounds of the Whittle dialect, list phonetically the informant's responses to questions from books I-IX of the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire, and present orthographic and phonetic transcriptions of a tape-recorded conversation between collector and informant. The original tape recording was copied onto a gramophone disc, which accompanies the study. A Word List is also included.

A duplicate set of Questionnaire responses is also presented with the study. These are recorded on printed Response Book sheets [62 loose ms. leaves].
