Description
A study of the dialect spoken in Biddenden in Kent, based on answers given to the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire during fieldwork interviews with three Biddenden residents (one of whom was the collector's grandfather).
An introduction to the village, and the three informants, is followed by five chapters which present the sounds of the dialect recorded in 195[8], describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 195[8], and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Old Norse and Old French equivalents of stressed vowels in the living dialect. A Word List and postcard prints showing views of the village are included.
