Description
A study of the writings of John Askham, shoemaker and author from Wellingborough in Northamptonshire.
Askham's prose is discussed in relation to street literature of the beginning of the nineteenth century, and his poetry in relation to political movements, and as an example of the way in which poets who educated themselves sought to imitate the established works of English literature. Examples of his writing, seen by Davies as typifying Askham's attitudes, are included. The study also looks at the type of audience to which Askham appealed, and why.
The study comprises an introductory section, a biography, and sections on prose and street literature, literature as propaganda, Askham's poetry and his audience.
