A description of Spring calendar customs observed in Salford, Greater Manchester.


An Introduction presents a history of the town, followed by three main sections. The first covers the Easter period, and includes descriptions of Shrovetide, Simnel Sunday and Pace-Egging. The second section concerns May Day, with sections on Pendleton Pow-Posey or Pole, street May Day and the portable maypole, parade of the May Queen and Molly dancers, May Day processions (Bell Horse Day). The third section concerns the Whitsun period, with descriptions of the Whit Week Races in the eighteenth century and the Whit Walks (past and present). A Salford street map and cuttings from local newspapers are included as illustrations.
