Description

A study of Loughborough Market, comprising ten chapters and nine appendices. The chapters offer general comments on markets, the population of Leicestershire, descriptions of Loughborough Market from its creation through to the present day, an interview with the Markets Manager, a description of Market Day, examples of individual stallholders and thoughts on the future of the market in Loughborough.


Appendices contain newspaper cuttings relating to new markets in other parts of the country, information on the change of Loughborough market's position in bad weather, the Corporation workers' strike of October 1970, market slang, the cattle market, Loughborough Fair, market crosses, pitchers, and a transcript of a market pitcher's patter, recorded at Sneinton Market, Nottingham, in September 1970. Photographs taken by the collector show views of the market and individual stalls.
