Description
A dissertation comprising six sections. The Introduction presents a brief history of french polishing, followed by a section explaining the materials, tools and techniques of the french polisher (preparation of surfaces, improving, filling, stains and dyes, rubbers, matching, oil and wax finishes, varnishing, other finishes, repolishing, cellulose, brushes). The third section considers apprenticeships, followed by sections on relationships with other trades, relationships with customers and the situation in the french polishing trade in 1981. An Appendix contains ms. transcripts of tape-recorded interviews with the collector's father and brother, made in August 1980 in Witley, Surrey [tapes not submitted].
