Description

A project which outlines the processes involved in the extraction of lead ore, and the production of the metal. A mine-by-mine history of lead mining activities in Nidderdale and Wharfedale is presented, and the lifestyle and customs of the miners examined (with particular reference to the village of Greenhow Hill). The project also presents a photographic record of the tools used in the industry, together with some explanation of the way in which they were used. The third of its four sections is based on the personal reminiscences of two lead miners from Greenhow Hill. A glossary of mining terms in common use among the miners of Wharfedale and Nidderdale is also included.
