Description
A study detailing the history and past working traditions of the Somerset coalfields, with particular reference to collieries at Kilmersdon and Writhlington.
The first of four sections presents a history of coal mining in the county, including sections on nationalisation, strikes and accidents. Section two covers the miner's work, with sections on tools, working methods and the working day. The third section describes social organisation in the coalfield, with sections on Friendly Societies, Unions and religion. The final section provides examples of custom, belief and oral (songs, stories) tradition. Appendices offer a note on vernacular architecture of the area (with photographs) and a select glossary of local mining terms.
