Description
A dissertation which focusses on the life of the miner away from his place of employment, and describes miners' recreational activities in the Lancashire village of Abram during the years 1900 to 1925.
The dissertation's sections provide background information on coal mining in Abram, and descriptions of the miners' daily work routines and leisure time activities. The latter includes tossing pennies, Piggy, Knock-Up, Peg-Top, keeping pigeons and whippets, constructing and operating crystal sets (radios) and Morris dancing. Two appendices contain information on pit explosions and transcriptions of interviews with six informants. The dissertation also includes photographs of the area, a tune transcription for the Abram Morris and Maypole dance, and copies of printed documents relating to the Abram mining disaster of 1908.
