Description
A study which examines the custom of making and giving carved spoons as love tokens in Wales. Consideration is given to the custom, the spoon itself (shape and form, decoration and how and where it was made), and how and for what purpose love-spoons were still being made when the investigation was carried out. Research involved a viewing of the spoon collection held by the Welsh Folk Museum, and an interview with a wood-turner living in Tregoes. Six chapters describe the history of the custom, the making of the spoon, the spoon as a love symbol, the form and decoration of the spoon, spoons and other love tokens from other countries and modern spoon makers. Copies of photographs of spoons are included within the study.
