Description
An investigation into the practice of thatching in 1966 in the rural areas of south Warwickshire and the Oxfordshire border, based on fieldwork visits and interviews with four working thatchers made during Easter and the Summer of 1965.
The study comprises two volumes. The first contains an introduction to the investigation and a brief history of thatching (introduction, materials, methods, prohibitive measures against thatching), followed by sections on the preparation and laying of particular materials (long straw, combed wheat reed and Norfolk reed). Further sections cover decoration and spar making. Appendices include extracts copied from 'Rural Economy in Yorkshire in 1641' (published by the Surtees Society in 1857), being the farming and account books of Henry Best of Elmsall; notes made by one of the collector's informants, notes on thatchers' tools, distribution maps, notes on the payment of thatchers and thatching specifications ( Rural Industries Bureau leaflet No.60). A glossary of thatching names and terms is included.
Volume Two contains pencil drawings and photographs illustrating the complete thatching process, including the techniques employed and the tools used, and examples of completed roofs.
