Description
A study concerned with the past and present state of the basketmaking industry in the West Riding, and the manner in which the craft is practiced. The collector's observations are based largely on a study of one particular firm of basketmakers, J. Burdekin of Ossett. Fieldwork was carried out during August and September 1964.
The study's eight chapters cover the history of basketmaking, materials, tools, techniques (with sections on weaves and construction), textile skeps, the state of the industry in 1964 and prospects for the future, amateur basketwork and occupational therapy. A vocabulary of technical terms is provided. Photographs show the storage and preparation of willow and cane, basketworkers' tools, the various stages in the making of baskets, the inside of factory premises and a number of completed baskets. The collector's own pencil drawings of basket weaves, and Burdekin's price list and product leaflets, are also included.
