Description
A factual survey of the external features of the houses and gardens within part of the Harehills area of north-east Leeds . In addition to collecting and documenting this survey material, further fieldwork was carried out to provide background information concerning the area, its residents, the interior features of the houses and any other information which was relevant and gave insight into the results of the survey.
The study is in two parts. The first contains five chapters, describing in turn research methodology (including interviews with residents), the houses' external features (with sections on decoration, ornamentation, renovation and innovation), historical background and contemporary information about the houses, their occupants and the area in general, analysis of the features on the survey sheets and a conclusion.
The survey sheets record the house's location, age, type, style, aspect, external features (doors, windows, chimneys) and building materials. Such details are supplemented by the collector's pencil drawings and photographs. The layout of the survey sheets is based on that employed by Ronald Brunskill in his 'A Systematic Procedure for Recording English Vernacular Architecture'.
