Description
A dissertation examining the question of what some people keep on their mantelpieces - which objects are placed there, and why - and to what extent the owners are conscious of the mantelpiece as a feature of the room. The study comprises seven chapters, in two sections. The first presents a history of the mantelpiece and the aims and methods of the study (including fieldwork carried out in Leeds), whilst the second section covers the contemporary mantelpiece, and describes types of mantelpiece and its place in the room, how the mantelpiece is used (functional and decorative uses), the mantelpiece and the occupant, tradition and sentiment. Photographs illustrate examples from houses in which fieldwork was carried out.
