Description

A study of the folklore of eleven informants living in villages to the north of Peterborough ( Crowland, Helpston, Whittlesey, Glinton and Maxey). The study comprises five chapters, with the first presenting a historical and topographical introduction to the Fenland area. This is followed by chapters covering illnesses and cures (medicinal herbs, local remedies), animal and weather lore, beliefs (regarding ghosts) and sayings, stories and jokes and historical tales. Two appendices include information on the legend of Hereward the Wake and the site of Alrehede Castle (the scene of the routing of William I's army).
