Description

An M.A. study of the dialect spoken in Albrighton , based on data collected from four principal informants. This data comprises responses to some of the questions in the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire, and incidental material recorded during free conversations tape recorded in October and November 1958.

An introduction to the village, and an account of the collector's fieldwork and informants, is followed by six chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1958, the development of the Middle English stressed vowels in the dialect, a tabular summary of the Old English, Middle English and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the living dialect, the development of the Middle English unstressed vowels in the dialect, changes in consonantal sounds from the Old English and Middle English periods to 1958, and a description of morphology and syntax.

Appendix A contains phonetic and orthographic transcriptions of the original sound recordings of the four speakers contained on one open reel audio tape submitted with the thesis. An Index is contained in Appendix B.
