Description
M.A. thesis based on fieldwork carried out during the period October 1958 to November 1959, collecting material for the proposed 'Linguistic Atlas of England'. Not all of the material obtained during the fieldwork was used in compiling the thesis, and its scope is limited to the counties of Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
The thesis comprises two volumes, with the first containing eight chapters and an appendix, and the second tables and word maps. The study describes the methods of investigation, gives details of the sources of information and descriptions of the area under consideration, noting factors in the social, economical, geological and historical background which may have influenced the development and distribution of the modern dialects. The study also shows the sounds of the dialects phonetically, indicates the distribution of the various reflexes of the Middle English phonological system, and suggests some dialectal boundaries using evidence of lexical material and certain grammatical features. Where possible, the findings of the collector's survey are compared with those of previous investigators.
Sixteen localities were investigated, and responses to the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire noted phonetically in Response Books. Tape recordings were made in fifteen of the localities and copied onto fourteen gramophone discs. In the analysis of this material two Response Books and two discs of recordings made by Peter Wright in 1952 (in Farningham and Walton-on-the-Hill) have been included. Orthographic transcriptions of the sixteen disc recordings are included as an appendix in Volume One of the thesis.
