Description
M.Phil. study of children's folklore in Hull and Beverley, in two parts. Part One contains an introductory chapter offering definitions of folklore and traditions, the term school children, an outline of the geographical region and period under consideration, the classification of items employed by the collector (in relation to the approaches of Henry Bolton, Lady Alice Gomme, Leslie Daiken and Doreen Gullen. Further sections contain biographical notes on the informants, details of the schools they attended and the methodology employed by the collector in gathering information. The second chapter details the social background of the children of the years 1890-1910.
Part Two contains an introduction to the games, followed by chapters on outdoor ball games, outdoor games requiring equipment other than a ball, games requiring no equipment, indoor games, rhymes and parodies, rudery and obscenities, pranks and superstitions of interest to children.
Appendices include a tune index, tune transcriptions of fifty-seven singing games and hand-drawn street plans of Beverley and Hull.
