Description
A thesis presented as part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Folk Life Studies. Part One comprises the tape recordings made by the collector of Packie Byrne singing, playing the whistle and talking in Sheffield, Liverpool, Leeds, Huddersfield and Keele . These are unedited recordings, which also include some comparative material from other singers and instrumentalists. Some of the material was recorded several years before the thesis was written. Part Two provides an introduction to the collection and the material, Tape Tables of Contents and index to the tape recordings, and textual transcriptions of Byrne's songs and humorous stories. Part Three contains eight chapters, with notes for each song (origins, variants and relatives), studies (including tune transcriptions) of three particular songs, 'Naming the Child', 'Newcastle Brown Ale' and 'Twenty, Eighteen' , biographical information and chapters on Packie Byrne the song maker, whistle player and storyteller. The concluding chapters analyse
the singer, his repertoire and his audience, and suggest further work to be done with Packie Byrne and his material.
