Description
M.A. dissertation on the ritual life of the Bakossi tribe in south-western Cameroon. The rituals are presented in the light of Bakossi original beliefs and thinking, that is, they are described as they were before the coming of the white man, so as to portray what distinguishes the Bekosse (in terms of rituals) from people of other societies. The thesis's three chapters cover marriage, pregnancy, childbirth and child care, death and funerary rites. A final chapter offers an analysis of some aspects of the rituals previously described. An appendix contains a selection of questions and answers, transcribed from the collector's field tape recordings and note books.
