Description

M.A. study of the women of the Rhondda Valleys and their roles as wife, mother and neighbour, on both a practical level in terms of physical comfort and support, and on an abstract level in terms of psychological support. Subjects covered include cleanliness, order, finance, washing, cooking, bathing, meals, clothing, sleeping arrangements, treats and special occasions, outings and birthdays, pocket money, discipline and the Chapel, manners, chastity, religion, childbirth and birth control and transmission of domestic skills. The study is illustrated throughout with extracts from fieldwork tape recordings.


Appendices contain an interview plan, folkloristic material (household superstitions and beliefs, medical beliefs, pit superstitions and beliefs, nicknames) collected during fieldwork interviews, and biographies of the informants.
