Description
This Ph.D. thesis is divided into three parts. The first (Introduction) defines the word folklore, describes the purpose of the work and the method of approach. The second (The Folklore of South Warwickshire) contains ten chapters, covering the folklore and customs of human life, the folklore of nature, legends, the supernatural (ghosts and witches), customs (calendar and general), cures (human and animal), recreation, material objects, crafts and miscellaneous verbal traditions. This part also contains an appendix, listing Warwickshire charities. Part three (Commentary) gives observations on the material, and describes the collector's research methodology. The thesis also contains a list of villages and informants, an index of tale types, a motif and a general index.
Two photocopies of press articles relating to the collector and his research are inserted inside the front cover.
