Description
This file comprises correspondence between Stewart Sanderson and others on proposals for dialect-related publications following the completion of 'The Linguistic Atlas of England' (LAE). This includes correspondence between Sanderson and Christopher Helm at Croom Helm concerning a series of regional English monographs proposed by Roger Lass (Department of Linguistics, University of Edinburgh), including copy correspondence and a proposal from Lass (September-November 1979); correspondence with John Widdowsonreferring to Lass's proposal, and to Eduard Kolb's phonological atlas, with a photocopy of Widdowson's ms. notes on the atlas content compared with the LAE (October 1979-January 1980); correspondence with Bertil Hedevind of the Engelska Institutionen, Uppsala University, and Gunnel Melchers of the Engelska Institutionen, Stockholm University, regarding a forthcoming visit to Leeds to discuss a dialect dictionary based on the Survey of English Dialects (SED) (October-November 1979); and
correspondence with Clive Upton with reference to the English Dialect Survey Dictionary Project (September 1982).
A second file, containing correspondence between Stewart Sanderson and Wolfgang Viereck, has been added to the file above, following its discovery and transfer to the LAVC by Clive Upton of the University of Leeds late in 2004. The bulk of this draft/final correspondence (1979-1983) relates to the English Dialect Survey Dictionary Project and the transfer of the Survey of English Dialects Basic Material onto computer punched cards. Agendas for working sessions (1979) are also included, as is Sanderson's correspondence with Arne Zettersten (University of Copenhagen) and Alan Thomas (University College of North Wales).
The files are arranged chronologically and by author.
