Description

Although separated into two physical file folders, these files were originally held as two folders within a single filing-cabinet file. The first file was originally housed in a folder labelled Dialect Survey and contains a report for the session 1964-1965 on Survey of English Dialects (SED) progress for the previous year; a publicity leaflet for volumes 1 and 4 of the Basic Material (i.e. Northern Counties and the Isle of Man, and Southern Counties); printed diagrams including a pole wagon, a shippon and barn, a plough and plough harness, and gates and fencing; copy correspondence from Harold Orton to the University administration on the SED and its progress, finance, publication programme and Eduard Kolb (1964-July 1967); copy monthly reports on the progress of the Southern Counties Basic Material volume (1966); letters of application, copies of letters of reference and related correspondence between Stewart Sanderson and candidates for research positions relating to the SED and its
publication (including Mary Lee al-Azawi), and relating to the continued employment of Michael Barry, Philip Tilling, and Martyn Wakelin (October 1965-April 1967); miscellaneous correspondence with Harold Orton and copy correspondence from Orton and the Registrar (August 1965-July 1967).

The second file was originally housed in a folder labelled Bursar, and contains copy and original correspondence concerning orders for copies of SED Basic Material volumes (July 1967-January 1968), the financing of the SED and grants in aid from the Hamlyn Trust and Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society (April-May 1970); correspondence with the Registrar and others regarding the publication of 'The Linguistic Atlas of England' (LAE) and future SED-related publications, including a photocopied typed draft of the LAE Foreword and Introduction (May 1975-November 1979); correspondence between Sanderson and Chris Hatton, editor of the 'University of Leeds Review', regarding Sanderson's article on the LAE and including a photocopied typed draft of the article 'Language on the Map'; and undated print requisition forms.

The arrangement of files is largely chronological, and by subject.
