Description
The series includes mounted Northern Counties word maps, some originally completed in ms. by Harold Orton, and some printed and headed Survey of English Dialects; mounted word maps of England and Wales, some originally completed in ms. by Orton and some printed; other word maps based on SED data; reproductions of Stanley Ellis's map of the Northern Counties; base maps of England, and England and Scotland, apparently produced as part of a language survey with localities marked; reproductions of published maps showing Middle English dialect areas; a wall map of the British Isles published by George Philip and Son; a negative reproduction of Edward Baines' 1822 map of the West Riding of Yorkshire; and printed maps showing the regions of Norway.
Provenance
The maps in this series are predominantly related to English dialects and based on Survey of English Dialects (SED) data, although they cannot be specifically linked to the SED publication programme.
The size of the maps in this series, and the fact that some are mounted, implies that they may have been used as visual aids in teaching, or simply for display purposes.
System of arrangement
The grouping of the maps into this series is based on their size, the majority being larger than A3 format. Word maps based on SED data have been arranged in the order of the SED Questionnaire.
