Description

This series includes a large number of experimental word maps based on the data collected by the Survey of English Dialects (SED) for England (with Wales and Scotland); photocopies and transparencies of experimental word maps for England (with Wales and Scotland) and the Northern Network of Localities, probably used by Harold Orton for teaching purposes; loose collections of photocopied, printed and ms.-completed maps relating to historical linguistics and language/dialect areas, possibly used as teaching aids; and an experimental map after the 'Linguistic Atlas of Scotland'.

The majority of the experimental maps appear to have been either drawn or co-authored by Orton. Others involved in the production of these experimental linguistic maps include David North, Philip Tilling, Martyn Wakelin and Tony Green.

System of arrangement

Where appropriate, experimental maps based on SED data have been arranged within their files according to the order of the SED Questionnaire. The largest file of SED experimental maps (LAVC/MAP/2/1) is arranged alphabetically by notion, which preserves the order imposed by Orton.
