Description

This subfonds contains a collection of maps that cannot be specifically linked with either the Survey of English Dialects (SED) publication programme, or with the activities of the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies (IDFLS). It includes base and outline maps; maps used for reference; maps and related papers that may have been employed in teaching; and many experimental word maps based on the results of the SED.

The experimental maps bear many similarities to the various word maps produced for A Word Geography of England (WGE) and The Linguistic Atlas of England (LAE). However, given the lack of direct evidence for their connection to these publications in particular, it was considered inappropriate to incorporate them into a publication-specific subfonds.

System of arrangement

The subfonds has been arranged in the following series:

- Base and Dialect Area Maps

- Experimental Maps, etc.

- Over-sized Maps
