Description
This subseries contains a variety of ms. and typescript papers produced during the editorial planning and preparation of 'The Linguistic Atlas of England' (LAE). It includes ms. and typed memos, agendas, minutes and notes relating to the LAE Editorial Committee; ms. and typescript editorial notes belonging to Stewart Sanderson, John Widdowson, and Clive Upton; Harold Orton's typed and ms. lists of morphological, phonological and syntactical notions for mapping, including a list of maps for Nathalia Wright to draw, and a set of ms. index cards with notions mapped/to be mapped; typed checklists for final map drafts; typescript notes (some with ms. annotations) on maps in the lexical run, including rejections; and sheets of symbols and special characters used for the maps.
This subseries also contains papers relating to the planning and checking of LAE maps. Draft and completed maps are held within subseries LAVC/LAE/1/2.

The files are arranged to reflect the process of editing and publication: Editorial Committees and editorial procedure (Orton); lists of notions for mapping and/or notions mapped (Orton); staff files (Sanderson, Widdowson, Upton); checklists, etc.
