Description

This subseries consists of papers relating to the preparation and production of maps for 'A Word Geography of England' (WGE). It includes typed editorial notes on mapping conventions; typed lists of notions to be mapped and maps provisionally accepted for inclusion in the WGE; photocopied maps from other publications (possibly used for reference); original and photocopied draft WGE maps, including some final drafts; and Harold Orton's typed notes on the proposed treatment of Survey of English Dialects (SED) incidental material in the WGE maps. The maps were produced by Harold Orton and Nathalia Wright.

System of arrangement

The arrangement of the files in this subseries largely reflects the order of the WGE. Draft maps have been filed in numerical order as they appear in the published version. Larger intellectual files have been housed in two physical files.
