Description
This subseries consists of papers relating to the editing of fieldwork data collected in the West Midlands and other western English counties, in preparation for the publication of the Survey of English Dialects (SED) West Midland Counties Basic Material volume. It includes correspondence between Michael Barry and Monmouthshire County Council regarding locality information for Skenfrith and Llanellen, and with Peter Wright and Mary Lee Al-Azawi concerning editorial issues with the West Midland Counties Basic Material volume (January 1967; August 1968; November 1969); typed drafts, annotated and corrected in ms., of preliminaries and informant information for the West Midlands SED volume and related ms. notes; a complete set of printers' sheets (i.e. including all the SED questions) in ms., mostly in phonetic script, with SED data for print; galley proofs for SED questions VII.3.13 Tomorrow morning - VII.5.12 Meal out; and a bound proof copy of Part 1 of the West Midland Counties Basic
Material volume.
Provenance
The printers' sheets were all passed by Harold Orton, and include his initials and a checking date, as well as some corrections. They also appear to have been checked and corrected by Mary Lee Al-Azawi (M.L.A.) and H.P.D, whose initials are also included on the sheets.
The volume was published by E. J. Arnold and Son Limited in 1969, and was edited by Harold Orton and Michael Barry.
Page Cont. 3 of the printers' sheets, containing data for SED question VI.8.2 Coughing, was used in an exhibition mounted for the Harold Orton Centenary Conference at the University of Leeds in March 1998.
System of arrangement
The arrangement of the files is roughly chronological, following the order of the editorial and printing processes. The printers' sheets are in SED question number order, as printed.
