Description
This subseries contains papers relating to the editing of fieldwork data collected in Northern England and the Isle of Man, in preparation for the publication of the Survey of English Dialects (SED) Northern Counties Basic Material volume. It includes ms. notes and drafts; printers' sheets completed in ms., mostly in phonetic script, with SED data for print; typed phonetic word lists; maps; printers' proofs; and ms. and photocopied pages of errata and addenda.
Provenance
The majority of drafts and ms. notes appear to have been compiled by Harold Orton. The volume was published by E. J. Arnold and Son Limited in 1962-1963, and was edited by Harold Orton and Wilfrid J. Halliday.
System of arrangement
The arrangement of the files is roughly chronological, following the order of the editorial and printing processes. In some cases, individual intellectual files have been housed in more than one physical file.

Access to the manuscript and printed items in this subfonds is unrestricted. Mini disc copies of the audio tape recordings are available for consultation in the searchroom of Special Collections, University of Leeds. Access copies of the gramophone disc recordings are not available.
