Description

This sub-subseries includes typescript drafts of version 1 of the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire; correspondence with the Yorkshire Dialect Society; an ms. notebook and fieldwork response books belonging to Harold Orton recording dialect responses at locations in Bradwell, Castleton, Tideswell and Hathersage (all Derbyshire); and a series of index cards completed in ms. by Harold Orton, recording dialect responses of a speaker from Drax [? Mr. Shipley] to version 1 of the Questionnaire.

Provenance

The recordings from locations in Derbyshire probably predate the compilation of version 1 of the Questionnaire. Orton undertook exploratory investigations of dialect in Derbyshire and Yorkshire in September 1946, but Orton and Dieth did not begin work in earnest on the first version of the Questionnaire until August 1947. Orton may have used responses gathered during this exploratory fieldwork to inform the compilation of the first version of the Questionnaire. See Craig Fees, 'The Imperilled Inheritance: Dialect and Folklife Studies at the University of Leeds 1946-1962. Part 1: Harold Orton and the English Dialect Survey' (London: The Folklore Society, 1991).

System of arrangement

The arrangement of the files is roughly chronological. Larger file sections have been housed in two physical files. The index cards are arranged alphabetically by Questionnaire item.
