Description
This series contains items which relate in the main to the collection of fieldwork data for the Survey of English Dialects (SED). The practical starting point for the SED was the production of the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire, which ultimately underpinned all the fieldwork undertaken. This series includes papers created and collected during the drafting, testing and publication of the Questionnaire; original and duplicate response books used by fieldworkers to record informants' responses to the questionnaire; papers and correspondence concerning individual SED informants and fieldworkers; and a set of papers created during the collation of SED fieldwork responses collected in the West Midland counties.
Biography or history
Contextual information relating to the development of the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire has been included at subseries level ( LAVC/SED/2/1); fieldworkers and the collection of data ( LAVC/SED/2/2); and the selection of informants ( LAVC/SED/2/6).
