Description
Harold Orton promoted the Survey of English Dialects (SED), and the proposed Linguistic Atlas of England, to academic and public audiences at home and abroad, through the writing of papers for presentation at conferences and publication in academic journals, public lectures and talks, radio broadcasts and teaching. These are presented in this subseries in manuscript and typescript (draft and final) form, with many of the drafts including Orton's handwritten revisions and emendations. Orton edited earlier versions of his writings for re-use with new and different audiences, and as a consequence there exist multiple copies of several of his lectures. Some of his rough lecture notes are made on notebook pages and index cards.
This subseries also contains multiple photocopies of dialect word maps, sketches and drawings, word response lists, pages from the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire, fieldwork response books and the Basic Material volumes, used to illustrate Orton's talks and articles.
The teaching materials within this subseries relate in the main to Orton's time as visiting English professor in universities in North America, and include book/reading lists, timetables and correspondence.
