Description
The larger part of this sub-subseries comprises letters sent to Harold Orton from members of the public, in response to newspaper articles and radio broadcasts on the Survey of English Dialects (SED). The enquiries relate to particular dialect words and phrases from across the country, personal research, other regional/local dialect surveys and the availability of SED word maps and audio recordings of speakers. There are also copies of Orton's letters to a number of SED informants, thanking them for their help; and some correspondence with academic colleagues regarding the publication and financing of the Basic Material volumes. The majority of items in this sub-subseries were created during the period 1947-1971.
System of arrangement
Files within the sub-subseries are arranged in a broadly chronological and alphabetical order, the latter by personal/corporate name, or by subject. Individual letters within each file are arranged alphabetically by sender, and chronologically.
