Description
Ms. record cards compiled by Harold Orton, recording data for Bamburgh, Capheaton, Glanton and Whittingham, Newbiggin and Stanhope, and a run of cards where the locality remains unidentified. The cards were identified by Rydland as being the remnants of provisional Locality Indexes, having been discarded once data was transferred to the permanent Locality Indexes and to the Main Index. Some of the cards have been re-used and contain information for more than one locality, with the previous information scored out. The cards duplicate data held in the Locality Indexes, recording phonetic spellings of individual words, word class and orthographic spellings of individual words. The locality name is not given on individual cards, but is identifiable through comparison with the Locality Indexes. Rydland notes that there should be 35 unidentified cards, but only 8 are present (Rydland, 'The Orton Corpus', p. 12).
The cards are arranged alphabetically by locality name.
