Bindings
Late fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century full binding of dark brown calf over wooden boards, rebacked. Both the upper and lower boards are blind-tooled with a frame of triple fillets inside which are diagonal triple fillets containing lozenge-shaped ornaments of stylised foliage. There is evidence of two clasps with the remains of a metal catch on the upper board. Single leaves of vellum manuscript with initials, paragraph markers and marginal decoration in red and blue have been bound at the front and back. The replacement spine is of brown calf and has four raised bands. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Explanationes in totem Psalmi Davidis. Gold-tooled in the third panel is the name: S. Augustine. Gold-tooled in the bottom panel are the place and date: Basilea 1497. Written in early ink manuscript on the fore-edge: qui[n]quagena. Size: 312 x 231. Leaf size: 298 x 208mm.
Provenance
On the title leaf is a sixteenth-century inscription in black ink manuscript: m[agister] John Eccleston, plausibly the same man who was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge 1514-1516.
Written in ink at the bottom of the leaf of vellum manuscript bound at the front of the book is a library number: B. 13. 2. This is written in the same hand as that on the armorial bookplate on the front pastedown of the Brotherton Collection's copy of De trinitate (Basel, 1489) which identifies the owners as the family of Belasyse, lords Fauconberg.
Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
